At TRG, we’ve been thinking a lot about leaders who move organizations along the path to sustainability and then drive the them toward the resilience that will be required in the next decade. Developing a resilient organization requires some level of grit and Angela Duckworth in her book, Grit: the Power of Passion and Perseverance, shares her insight on why talent is hardly a marker of success. Based on her research, grit is a combination of passion and perseverance in achieving goals.
Take a moment and ask yourself: Are you cultivating your personal grit as a leader and in your team? Do you have the grit to do these things confidently and authentically in your institution? We believe that grit requires passion for your organization and its purpose, investing practice and coaching time to grow your leadership skills, and belief that in doing so you and your team will have profound impact on the mission of your organization’s work. If you are not familiar with Duckworth’s book or her work, check out the 2013 TED Talk where she outlines her theory of grit as a predictor of success.
Executive leaders must make time to develop themselves in dialogue with their peers and we invite you to join Jill on June 27 for the next Arts Leadership Book Club. Registrants will have the opportunity to select one of two ways to be a part of the conversation:
1) Participants will be required to read the book in advance and come prepared to actively engage in conversation with Jill and a select group of leaders in the industry. Those who are chosen to be a participant will be notified in advance and will be asked to be on camera during Book Club. Please note that not all names entered in to the participant option will be selected for the June Book Club but will be saved for future consideration.
2) Observers are encouraged, but not required, to read the book in advance. Those who elect to listen in to the conversation will have opportunities to ask questions of the Participants at appropriate times.
Registration for Arts Leadership Book Club is free and those who register in advance will receive a confirmation email with complete details on attending. Have a question? Send us an email at
and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
